The seniors league final took place today Tuesday 1st September in Glenville which was in top class condition. The holders Lucan took on Erins Isle in a match of contrasting fortunes.
Erins Isle took an early lead securing the first foursomes and when they also won the second and third Lucan were in big trouble.
The early exchanges in the singles were going Erins Isle way and they looked in total control. The Lucan team facing defeat in the face then started to claw back the Isles lead and when Johnny Price got their first point the tide was turning in their favor. Lucan got the next 2 points through Gerry Ward and Sean Dillon it was then game on. MJ Maher 3 down after 10 showed his inter co class by winning the next 5 holes to go 2up with 3 to play over Eddie Cleary . The last match out saw Jimmy Pegley in top form against Frank Reilly and he duly won on the 15th. This left it 4-3 to Lucan and with Mick Monahan having a titanic battle with Dave Potter Level after 17 MJ ‘s match was proving crucial. He was 2 up playing 17 and when he pitched the green Eddie needed at least a birdie to keep the match alive. He failed to do so and so the Old Co trophy was heading back to the 12th Lock for another year. Well done to Lucan on 3 in a row and hard luck to Erins Isle on a gallant effort but the experience will surely stand to them next season.
Our thanks to Mark and Breda on the running of the leagues this year.To the Glenville club for their facilities thank you its amazing to see the condition of your course after last year and every success for the future.
