The Dublin County Board U-16 Strokeplay, sponsored by McGuirks Golf, was played in Portmarnock Pitch and Putt Club today, the 29th June.
As is usual for this unique course it was presented in pristine condition and the welcome and facilities from Portmarnockclub and members was at its usual very high standards. Special thanks to Portmarnock P&P Club for facilitating this event on their fantastic course.
26 players took to the 1st tee for 36 holes of Strokeplay. This turnout is a very healthy figure and one for us to build on for the future.
The different categories for girls, boys and ages seen a number of players in each section which is great to see!!
The course was playing hard and fast after the wonderful weather that we have been having, and scoring was tough. Nevertheless all of the kids gave it their best and had a wonderful day out on the links!!
After the first 18 Oisin Horan from Glenville was the overall leader after a 59, with Luke Devlin, also from Glenville, one shot behind. Hot on their heels were Jamie Palmer from Glenville and Alex Keegan from Lucan. The girls section, which comprised 6 girls in total, and a great number to see out, was very close across the board with Rebecca Wall from the home club of Portmarnock leading the way and just edging it from the Ahearn sisters, Eimear and Meabh from Lucan.
On to the 2nd 18 and Alex Keegan was the clubhouse leader for quite a while after a well worked second round. Conor Cullen, another from the home club and playing in the Under 14 age group carded another solid round to be left in the prizes as it stood.
Also first in on the 2nd 18 was Rebecca Wall who carded a brilliant 63 to lead the girls section. This round, along with Rebecca’s first round of 70 would ultimately prove too much for any of the remaining girls to catch.
Out on the course however Oisin Horan was putting together a very solid round of 51, great scoring for the day that was in it. Oisin duly returned to the clubhouse on a score of 110 for 36 holes, great going!! The young man from Glenville had to wait for the remaining groups to finish their rounds before he could be assured of his overall victory, and this was the case as the last group containing Luke Devlin and Jamie Palmer could not make up the ground.
