On Monday evening in Ierne, Old County and Erins Isle went head to head in an intriguing Intermediate Gents Final. Both clubs had been searching for this title since the mid 80’s and the pressure was on the players to bridge that gap.
It was Erins Isle though who took the initiative in the all-important doubles as they took a 2-1 lead into the singles. This lead was extended when Ryan Cooney took the first single point and was quickly followed by a David Beatty win to take the Finglas club within touching grasp of the elusive title. Hope though, grew for Old County as they went up in the final 3 matches with Paul Griffin, Rob Berney and Tom McEwan all in good positions. It wasn’t to matter though as Erins Isle won the 3rd game on the 15th hole and therefore won the Intermediate Gents for the first time since 1985!!!
