National Seniors Stroke Play Championships

The National lady and gents stroke plays took place on the Erry course on Sat 21st/Sun 22nd Sept. The course was in great condition with the greens proving hard to master with their speed and undulations. The seniors were first out and Sheelagh Elmes the holder battled into contention in the 2nd round to eventually finish in 3rd spot .Our inter and junior ladies tried hard but failed to get into the top 3 but gave a good account of themselves in particular Betty Cody and Mary Fulham. Sunday saw the gents take centre stage and in the junior section Tom King had a 51 to lead after the first round but returned a 57 to slip back to 3rd spot.In the inter section good displays from Charlie Egan and Sean McGrath kept the flag flying for Dublin but failed to reach the rostrum. The senior section was to prove very exciting and after the 1st round Anthony Malone lead on 49.His 2nd 50 rd left him on 99 which looked a winning score until Patsy Reamsbottom Ferbane also shot 99 after rds of 50,49.In third spot after a brilliant 46 second rd was Kevin Bermingham who’s total was 101.The play off was eventually decided on the 10th hole after both players finished 2 under for 9 with Anthony Malone emerging victorious.Well done to all our participants over the weekend and to the Erry club for their hospitality to all the players and officials. They produced a course of the highest standard also and we wish them well for the future well done.
